I have so much respect for Jahmal Cole, and I diaried about him last winter. Jahmal created an organization called My Block My Hood My City. It’s based in Chicago, and the goal is to provide opportunities for underprivileged young people to experience the world outside their neighborhood. So many teenagers don’t have the means or the parental support to travel, and Jahmal sponsors programs to take kids to museums, fun events like cooking classes, travel to other cities, and even a trip to Ghana!
I love supporting M3, and what I really appreciate as a clueless white person is Jahmal creates projects where I can do more than donate money. Just like last winter where Jahmal organized people to shovel sidewalks after heavy snow, this year he wants to bring holiday lights to MLK Drive on the south side of Chicago.
Most of the holiday celebrations in Chicago are centered on the north side, and many residents from other areas don’t see the same effort in their neighborhoods. Be a Part of the Light is an easy, fun way to bring the holidays to a part of the city that is often overlooked.
There are many ways to support Jahmal’s important work. If you’re in the Chicago area, you can be part of the fun on either December 1 or December 8 to decorate portions of MLK Drive. He’s asking people to volunteer for 2 hours either day (or both!). Local businesses are donating hot chocolate and snacks. I’ve signed up for December 1, and I’m really looking forward to it.
But for anyone outside Chicago, Jahmal has set up an Amazon wishlist for lights, extension cords and ladders. Link to purchase off the wish list is here. Of course, you can donate directly, and Jahmal will use that money to purchase additional items. Even better, you can purchase one of these cute sweatshirts (Jahmal calls them hoodies, but I’m not seeing a hood).
